Scale Picker
Something I do on stream occasionally is to just improvise something on the spot, sometimes with a looper pedal, sometimes without, or sometimes when I’m working on a specific exercise I’ll use this to choose random keys to work out of. So I made this Scale Picker to make the choice of choosing scales more random!
The numbers correlate with different dice -
Which Scalular Mode to Play? Roll a d8(8 sided die)
Choosing the starting note in the center? roll a d12(12 sided die - you might think you could just roll 2 six sided dice because the max roll adds up to 12, but there are only 11 options with 2 six sided die, because you will never roll a 1 with 2 dice)
Playing a one octave Rhythmic Pattern? roll any die, just determined on whether it lands on an even or odd number, same with determining octave.
Also just to explain this last one, some scales you can play in 2 or more octaves right? So this roll is just to determine whether you play a rhythmic pattern in the higher octave or lower octave. I’ll have a short clip demonstrating what I mean with playing a rhythmic pattern with a scale, but in short its basically where you take a short rhythmic pattern(1-2 measures) and you repeat this pattern on each note in the scale going up, then down, or opposite.
I know these are a lot of words, but basically I really like rolling dice in DND and wanted to incorporate some of that randomness into my practicing!
I’m probably going to make a new version of this soon, but I think this is still a very good resource, so here it is for you to enjoy!
