Here’s What I’m up to Now
I got this idea from Andrew Hitz (check out his page here for more information about this concept!)
Basically think about this as my story/ what I’ve been doing! I will do my best to occasionally with more cool stuff!!
My name is Kyle Loughman, I am a Musician, Music Educator, streamer, and content creator. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from Kennesaw State University where I primarily studied with Bernard Flythe and a Master’s Degree in Music Performance where I studied primarily with Dr. Gail Robertson.
Through my undergrad I was continually inspired by all the great teachers and music that surrounded me. I attended as many concerts as I could and made sure to be on time and take great notes from the various classes and seminars I participated in. I had a lot of great opportunities from playing Sergei Prokofiev’s 5th Symphony to Ron Nelson’s Rocky Point Holiday; becoming an inaugural member of the “Marching Owls,” as well as a Sousaphone Section Leader in the second year; joined the Nu Mu chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi; and much more. Then one of the events that really pushed me towards my current career was the International Euphonium Tuba(IET) Festival. I was really inspired by all the amazing euphonium and tuba artists sharing their knowledge and their playing skills and it was here that I decided for myself that I wanted to become a great Artist Teacher, someone who could both teach and support their students at a high level and inspire others with my musical skills.
Eventually I graduated, and as someone with a Music Education degree I went to the Job Forums to look for a Band or other Music Teacher position and was unsuccessful after many weeks of applying for jobs, so with the help of some colleagues, I started down the route of being a freelance music educator. I taught many sectionals across Gwinnett County, private brass lessons through the New School of Music, and even Substitute taught for some band directors and a few other teachers. A few highlights from this era of my life were that I got to play tuba in the Centennial Alumni Band at the 2019 Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma National Convention in Stillwater, Oklahoma; I helped to start up and help engrave pieces for Pinnacle Brass Publishing; and I helped to start the Nu Mu Alumni Association and became the first president, a title I held for the first 5 years.
Then COVID hit and I was able to continue teaching a few lessons online and continue engraving for Pinnacle Brass, but a lot of my other work dried up instantly. Come the summer of 2020 I attended the online IET Festival and got to have a lesson with two great tuba/euph professors, Dr. Matt Hightower and Dr. Gail Robertson, as a result of having a lesson with the latter, Dr. Robertson, she invited me to come study at her school and work towards a Master’s degree in Music Performance on tuba. Of course I accepted and less than two months later I was moving from Georgia to Arkansas to go and study at the University of Central Arkansas! This was a great decision as I learned a lot, was able to level up my tuba playing exponentially, and most importantly met some really great colleagues that I still keep in contact with. Some highlights from this era - I played in the Denis Winter Memorial Tuba Euphonium Quintet and we even competed at the 2022 International Women’s Brass Conference; I was a Music Theory Graduate Assistant for my second year there; I conducted the UCA Tuba Euphonium Krewe at the 2022 Southeast Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference(SERTEC); and I got to meet Gene Pokorny of the Chicago Symphony and have a lesson with him! It was a great experience to study here, its a great place to go for a bachelor’s if you live in Arkansas and a great place to go for your Master’s!
So after I finished my degree at the University of Central Arkansas I moved back to Georgia to pick up where I left off with teaching sectionals across the Metro Atlanta Area. I haven’t really talked about the groups I’ve played with, but prior to COVID I played with the Gwinnett Symphony Orchestra and the Gwinnett Wind Symphony among other groups and upon returning to Georgia in 2022 I joined the Atlanta Wind Symphony and a bit over a year later I was invited to join Tara Winds and this year I officially joined the sub-list for the Georgia Brass Band. I’ve gotten to travel quite a few times with these groups and beyond. Like I said in the last paragraph I got to travel to the 2022 SERTEC and perform with and conduct the Tuba Euphonium Ensemble at UCA; I’ve played at the GMEA In Service Conference 3 times now with three different groups- the KSU Wind Ensemble in 2017, Atlanta Wind Symphony in 2024, and Tara Winds in 2025; I’ve also played at the College Band Directors Conference with the KSU Wind Ensemble and this Spring I’ll be playing there again with Tara Winds; finally I played at Carnegie Hall with Tara Winds this past Summer!
The last thing I’ll mention here is just to say in addition to starting back with teaching sectionals and such when returning from my master’s degree, I also started getting more serious with streaming and recording videos for my Youtube page. Prior to that I had made a few videos and done a handful of streams, but nothing as substantial as what I’ve done in the last almost 3 years aside from one de-listed video. I may not have a stable schedule with content creation, but I really enjoy doing it and sharing my knowledge and entertaining people from potentially all over the globe!
All in all I’ve had some really great opportunities and I am very much looking forward to what the future has to hold!! I hope to see you on one of my streams or in the comments of one of my videos!
What music am I listening to now - Twice! I’ve been a fan of Twice for a couple of years now, but after watching Kpop Demon Hunters, I’ve fallen back down the Twice rabbit hole! I think they’re very talented and like a comment I saw on one of their videos said, its honestly really impressive that they’ve, as a 9 person group, have been able to stay together for 10 years now! Sure there have been two or three members who have had to step away for a short bit for mental or physical health reasons, but they’ve stuck together for 10 years now and at least in the public videos they put out, it seems like they’re still very close. I feel like most bands are much smaller than that at 3-6 members and even with chamber groups in the classical world they often have members come and go, I know with Canadian Brass, they’ve had quite a few members who didn’t even last 5 years! I know for me all of the chamber groups I’ve been in haven’t really lasted past a year or two, the brass quintet I played in during my undergrad years lasted two years and every semester we had at least one or two members change and at the end, it was only me and one of the trumpet players who had been there since day 1.
What am I watching now - Just finished the new season of Stranger Things, now I need to find something else to watch.. recommendations are welcome!
Am I reading something now - No… I last was trying to read Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, I made it through the first book, and now I’m in limbo somewhere in the second book. The first book, Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, is very funny and just overall a really good time, and the second book, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, expands further and proves to be an equally fun time! I also got the book collecting all the volumes of Bone somewhat recently and need to finish it up, but I grew up reading the comic some when I was growing up, but never finished it, so I’m very excited to see how it wraps up!
What game am I playing now - Video Game wise I’ve fallen back into Skyrim.. but having a good time with it! Otherwise I’ve been really into Magic the Gathering lately and I’ve had a really good time playing mostly commander with a small group of friends, and occasionally draft! I’m super excited for the launch of Lorwyn Eclipsed, regardless if you’re into MTG or not, you should check out the Boggart Ballad video they made in collaboration with the Jen Henson Company, its a really fun short Rock Ballad that gives a little bit of context of what Lorwyn is!
What am I practicing right now - I’m working on integrating more and more scales into my practice sessions. In addition to the normal scale, I’ve been working to get comfortable with scales in thirds, 3 note patterns, 4 note patterns, as well as the modal scale pattern for each scale! I’ve also got a mini concert tour coming up in the beginning of February, so I’m working to get really comfortable with all of that music, and I’ll be presenting at SERTEC in March, so I’m also working to iron out all of the details of that!
