Here’s What I’m up to Now

I got this idea from Andrew Hitz (check out his page here for more information about this concept!)

Basically think about this as my story/ what I’ve been doing! I will do my best to occasionally with more cool stuff!!

My name is Kyle Loughman, I am a Musician, Music Educator, streamer, and content creator. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from Kennesaw State University where I primarily studied with Bernard Flythe and a Master’s Degree in Music Performance where I studied primarily with Dr. Gail Robertson.

Through my undergrad I was continually inspired by all the great teachers and music that surrounded me. I attended as many concerts as I could and made sure to be on time and take great notes from the various classes and seminars I participated in. I had a lot of great opportunities from playing Sergei Prokofiev’s 5th Symphony to Ron Nelson’s Rocky Point Holiday; becoming an inaugural member of the “Marching Owls,” as well as a Sousaphone Section Leader in the second year; joined the Nu Mu chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi; and much more. Then one of the events that really pushed me towards my current career was the International Euphonium Tuba(IET) Festival. I was really inspired by all the amazing euphonium and tuba artists sharing their knowledge and their playing skills and it was here that I decided for myself that I was going to become a great Artist Teacher like them, someone who could both teach and support their students at a high level and inspire others with my musical skills.

Eventually I graduated, and as someone with a Music Education degree I went to the Job Forums to look for a Band or other Music Teacher position and was unsuccessful after many weeks of applying for jobs, so with the help of some colleagues, I started down the route of being a freelance music educator. I taught many sectionals across Gwinnett County, private brass lessons through the New School of Music, and even Substitute taught for some band directors and a few other teachers. A few highlights from this era of my life were that I got to play tuba in the Centennial Alumni Band at the 2019 Kappa Kappa Psi and Tau Beta Sigma National Convention in Stillwater, Oklahoma; I helped to start up and help engrave pieces for Pinnacle Brass Publishing; and I helped to start the Nu Mu Alumni Association and became the first president, a title I held for the first 5 years.

Then COVID hit and I was able to continue teaching a few lessons online and continue engraving for Pinnacle Brass, but a lot of my other work dried up instantly. Come the summer of 2020 I attended the online IET Festival and got to have a lesson with two great tuba/euph professors, Dr. Matt Hightower and Dr. Gail Robertson, as a result of having a lesson with the latter, Dr. Robertson, she invited me to come study at her school and work towards a Master’s degree in Music Performance on tuba. I accepted and less than two months later I was moving from Georgia to Arkansas to go and study at the University of Central Arkansas! This was a great decision as I learned a lot, was able to level up my tuba playing exponentially, and most importantly met some really great colleagues that I still keep in contact with. Some highlights from this era - I played in the Denis Winter Memorial Tuba Euphonium Quintet and we even competed at the 2022 International Women’s Brass Conference; I was a Music Theory Graduate Assistant for my second year there; I conducted the UCA Tuba Euphonium Krewe at the 2022 South Central Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference(SCRTEC); and I met Gene Pokorny of the Chicago Symphony and had a lesson with him! It was a great experience to study here, its a great place to go for a bachelor’s if you live in Arkansas and a great place to go for your Master’s regardless of where you are from!

So after I finished my degree at the University of Central Arkansas I moved back to Georgia to pick up where I left off with teaching sectionals across the Metro Atlanta Area. I haven’t really talked about the groups I’ve played with, but prior to COVID I played with the Gwinnett Symphony Orchestra and the Gwinnett Wind Symphony among other groups and upon returning to Georgia in 2022 I joined the Atlanta Wind Symphony and a bit over a year later I was invited to join Tara Winds and this year(2025) I officially joined the sub-list for the Georgia Brass Band. I’ve gotten to travel quite a few times with these groups and beyond. Like I said in the last paragraph I got to travel to the 2022 SCRTEC and perform with and conduct the Tuba Euphonium Ensemble at UCA; I’ve played at the GMEA In Service Conference 3 times now with three different groups on three different years- the KSU Wind Ensemble, Atlanta Wind Symphony, and Tara Winds; I’ve also played at the College Band Directors Conference with the KSU Wind Ensemble and Tara Winds; and finally I played at Carnegie Hall with Tara Winds this past Summer(2025)!

The last thing I’ll mention here is just to say in addition to starting back with teaching sectionals and such when returning from my master’s degree, I also started getting more serious with streaming and recording videos for my Youtube page. Prior to that I had made a few videos and done a handful of streams, but nothing as substantial as what I’ve done in the last almost 3 years aside from one de-listed video. I may not have a stable schedule with content creation, but I really enjoy doing it and sharing my knowledge and entertaining people from potentially all over the globe!

NEW UPDATE(3/19/26)

Somewhat fresh off of presenting at SERTEC(SouthEast Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference) and just attending it in general, it was a really great time!! I picked up two new method/etude books for my collection - Good Lips by Brenden Ige and 25 Advanced Studies for Tuba by Kevin Day(look forward to videos/ livestreams on these soon!!). Also there were lots of really inspiring and amazing performances, it was especially cool to see a good handful of colleagues perform at such high levels!! The big thing that I want to talk about here is that I had my first presentation at a conference ever!! You can check out the presentation in the Resources tab if you want to check it out, and expect a virtual version of it soon! I thought overall that it was a success, sure there may have been something like less than 20 or even 10 people there.. but I did it and the comments I received from the attendees were all positive! The other thing that I participated in was the South East Region Professional Tuba Euphonium Ensemble, which was very fun! We performed a mixture of arrangements and original works along with two pieces that featured two different soloists. I definitely needed to prepare more for that concert than I did… but once again it was fine.. A big lesson I gained from this conference especially with presenting for the first time, is that I need to put myself out there more to get more used to this kind of thing, so look forward to maybe more in person events from me and more livestreams!! Also as I further review my presentation document it’s funny realizing the little things you miss that are somewhat important.(lol)

The other thing I wanted to talk about with this update is that I also attended my first Twice Concert at the end of February and also just the largest concert I’ve ever attended!! One of my friends I attended the concert with was able to get the tickets for free because of a family connection to one of the businesses that owns/ rents one of the booths at State Farm Arena and it was a really cool experience! If you don’t know Twice, they are a 9 person K-Pop Girl Group that has been going for 10 years now and are doing this tour for their 4th full album, This is For. I’ve been listening to this group for about 6-ish years off and on, and have recently gotten more into listening to them since around the release of This is For, so it was really cool to be able to attend one of their concerts. The concert was really unique in that it was a 360 degree stage, where the stage was directly in the middle of the stadium rather than the stage being at one end or the other of the stadium! Another part of the concert that I really liked is that they give each member an opportunity to perform a solo song and it was really cool to see the difference in personal style from member to member.

All in all between SERTEC and the Twice concert, I’m very inspired right now and working on a couple of things to post soon, so stay tuned for some cool stuff soon.. I hope to see you on one of my streams or in the comments of one of my videos!

What music am I listening to now - Twice, A Tribe Called Quest, Mori Calliope

What am I watching now - Recently I’ve stepped back into watching anime, really excited for the finale of Frieren Season 2 and also I’ve been watching Zombieland Saga, an anime about a group of Zombie Idols. It’s a really funny show and has a lot of soul despite the lack of souls in the zombie girls!

Am I reading something now - I started to read If Cats Disappeared from the World by Genki Kawamura, I’ve heard about this one from a few people and saw it one day in a book store and thought why not, its about a 30 year old man who is diagnosed by a doctor that he’s going to die in several months, but then he is approached by the devil with an offer to extend his life! So far its interesting, but I will try to send an update here once I’ve finished it!

What game am I playing now - Video Game wise I’ve been going back and forth between Slay the Spire(the first one, haven’t gotten the second one yet) and Megabonk! Both are really fun games that are very easy to play a little bit at a time. And I’m still very into Magic the Gathering, I’m very much looking forward to Secrets of Strixhaven coming in literally a month!! I never really got to play Strixhaven when it was out, but I collected a fair bit of cards from the original Strixhaven set, including one of the precons, and all the cards seemed very cool!

What am I practicing right now - I’m using the Good Lips routines as my fundamentals/ warm up and it has honestly felt very good! I’ve also been playing through some of the Kevin Day Advanced Studies and I am really enjoying those etudes! Also I’ve volunteered to play the 3rd movement of the Yagisawa Tuba Concerto in the rehearsals with Tara Winds(Joshua Williams will be playing it at the concert), sooooo I’m also working on that movement a bit…. wish me luck!
